Giovanni Contardi is an Italian artist internationally recognised for his large-scale mosaics created entirely from original Rubik’s Cubes. His work transforms one of the most iconic objects of the 20th century into a contemporary artistic medium defined by a distinctive, recognisable visual language.

Each artwork is meticulously handmade by twisting and assembling individual Rubik’s Cubes.

Background

Contardi’s relationship with the Rubik’s Cube began in 2009 through competitive speedcubing, a discipline focused on solving the puzzle with maximum speed and precision. During this period, he established himself as a world-class practitioner and record holder, breaking three world records. This level of technical mastery became the foundation of his artistic research.

In 2013, he began experimenting with Rubik’s Cube mosaics, and by 2018 this exploration evolved into a full-time artistic practice, gaining international attention across the fields of contemporary art, design, and pop culture.

Selected Installations & Recognition

Contardi’s installations are permanently exhibited at the Disney Hotel New York – The Art of Marvel (Disneyland Paris) and at the Rossini National Museum in Italy.

His contribution to the development of “Rubik Cubism” has been recognised internationally, including a mention by Ernő Rubik, the inventor of the Rubik’s Cube, in his autobiographical book Cubed: The Puzzle of Us All (2020).

Current Practice

Today, Giovanni Contardi creates works for private collectors, exhibitions, and public spaces worldwide, continuing to expand the expressive and conceptual possibilities of the Rubik’s Cube as a contemporary artistic language.
